MODERN COLOR AT SOMA

There’s nothing quite like the energy of a live show in San Diego from a packed stadium to an intimate venue. This city knows how to bring the alternative music scene to life. Just recently I attended a show with Modern color headlining supported by MILLY,Webbed wing ,and Garage sale. The energy of this show was unreal and there were many significant musicians and people of the San Diego scene present to enjoy it. Side stage SOMA is San Diego and is known for hosting many local bands and smaller artists. The great thing about having a smaller venue and a big stage is the life the crowd carries. Just at this most recent show Modern color, the headliner,  who describes themselves more as melodic guitar-heavy alt-rock has fans ready to move from not only the mosh pit but stage diving. This crowd is full of highschool to college students making it a relatively young audience ready for motion. On to the bands themselves Garage sale opened the night with some very surprising guitar tones. The 4 piece band from Australia is full shoegaze and slowcore with fuzzy distorted breakdown thanks to the leading tone of the’ loomer’ pedal. Following Garage Sale was LA’s finest ‘MILLY’  with the recent release of their album ‘your own becoming’ the band stuck to a set full of their newest songs. MILLY can be best categorized into anthemic and immediate alt-rock. One of my personal favorites I think MILLY has some great catchy melodies with a darker distorted guitar tone. Third to go was’ Webbed Wing’ which many in the crowd new had some members of the popular band ‘superheaven’. Webbed wing was the stand out band of the night not in performance but the genre was way different than any of the bands on that line up. The 3 piece gave a performance that reminded many of the early 2000s rock/ pop-punk veering into an older type of music. The lead singer entertaining the crowd with just mere jokes and impressive vocals. Lastly, ‘modern color’ was set up and the room was packed. They open with a couple of songs from their most released album ‘There goes the dream’ which has been one of my favorite albums this year. Immediately woke up the crowd with more energy than before and there was constant stage diving, head banging, and moshing until the end of the set. The set was tight and worked great together meshing a blend of alternative rock genres and a few of my personal favorites. Any thoughts of these bands? Or even any opinions on the venue itself feel free to voice your opinion!
